Metal Roofing

Metal Roofing for Utah Homes & Buildings

Standing-seam and metal panel roofs built for snow, sun and wind.

Metal roofing has become a common choice along the Wasatch Front and in Utah's mountain communities. Smooth metal panels shed snow more readily than many other surfaces, hold up to strong sun, and suit both modern and traditional architecture. JCA Roofing & Steel installs metal roofing for residential and commercial buildings in Salt Lake City and across Utah.

As a crew that also works with structural steel, we are comfortable with the details metal roofing demands — panel layout, fastening, trim and flashing.

Standing-seam metal roofs

Standing-seam panels run from ridge to eave with raised, interlocking seams and concealed fasteners. Because the fasteners are hidden, there are fewer exposed penetrations for water to find, and the clean vertical lines are a popular look on homes, cabins and commercial buildings.

Exposed-fastener metal panels

Exposed-fastener panels are common on shops, barns, agricultural and light commercial buildings. They are fastened through the face of the panel and can be a practical, economical option when installed with attention to fastener placement and washers.

Snow, ice and Utah weather

Metal roofs in snow country need planning for where sliding snow will land. Snow guards or retention systems may be appropriate above entries, walkways, decks and lower roofs. Proper underlayment, ventilation and flashing at valleys and walls also matter where freeze-thaw cycles are common.

Re-roofing with metal

Converting an existing roof to metal starts with evaluating the deck and structure. We will explain what the change involves for your building and how it compares to replacing with the original material. For conventional shingle or low-slope roofs, see our roofing page.

FAQ

Metal Roofing FAQ

Standing-seam panels use concealed fasteners and raised interlocking seams, while exposed-fastener panels are screwed through the face of the panel. Standing seam is common on homes and finished commercial buildings; exposed-fastener panels are common on shops and agricultural buildings.

Snow tends to shed more readily from smooth metal panels. That is why it is important to plan where it will land and to consider snow guards above doors, walkways and lower roofs.

Often, yes. It depends on the condition of the roof deck and structure. We evaluate the existing roof during a site visit and explain what the conversion would involve.

Noise depends largely on what is under the panels. A metal roof installed over solid decking and underlayment on a home is generally much quieter than metal over open framing on a shop.
